Family Consumer Science

Family Consumer Science is a course designed to provide students with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in managing personal and family resources. The curriculum covers various aspects of daily living, including nutrition and wellness, financial literacy, human development, housing and interior design, and consumer education. Students will engage in hands-on projects, real-life simulations, and collaborative activities that foster critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Through this course, students will learn to:

  • Learn the aspects of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), including leadership skills, community service, and career preparation.
  • Plan and prepare nutritious meals while understanding the principles of diet and health.
  • Develop and manage a personal budget, understand credit, and make informed financial decisions.
  • Explore stages of human development and family dynamics.
  • Design and organize living spaces that are functional, aesthetically pleasing, and sustainable.
  • Navigate consumer rights and responsibilities, making smart and ethical choices in the marketplace.
  • Acquire basic sewing skills for personal and home use, focusing on techniques and projects that enhance everyday living.

Food Production and Management

Students will gain hands-on experience in various aspects of the culinary field, including knife skills, recipe development, and food presentation. The curriculum emphasizes the importance of proper food handling, sanitation, and safety in the kitchen.

Key components of the course include:

  • Mastering basic cooking techniques, such as sautéing, baking, grilling, and steaming.
  • Learning proper knife skills and kitchen safety protocols.
  • Understanding and applying principles of food preparation and presentation.

Students must be certified in ServSafe Food Handler for this course and it is highly recommended that students achieve ServSafe Food Manager certification to demonstrate their proficiency in food safety and their commitment to high standards in the culinary industry. it is not mandatory for completion of the course.

Programming 1

This course covers the basics of programming concepts, problem-solving techniques, and coding practices using a high-level programming language. Students will learn to write, test, and debug simple programs, developing a solid foundation for more advanced programming studies.

Key components of the course include:

  • Understanding basic programming concepts such as variables, data types, control structures (loops, conditionals), and functions.
  • Writing and implementing algorithms to solve problems and perform computations.
  • Learning to use an integrated development environment (IDE) and version control systems for coding and project management.
  • Developing debugging and testing skills to ensure code reliability and efficiency.
  • Exploring best practices for code readability and maintainability.
  • Introduction to basic concepts of object-oriented programming, including classes and objects (depending on the programming language used).

Students will engage in exercises designed to reinforce their understanding and application of programming principles. This course is required for graduation.
